About 1099 Estimator
1099 Estimator is a free online calculator that helps self-employed people in the United States — freelancers, gig workers, independent contractors, and sole proprietors — estimate the taxes they owe on their 1099 income. We built it because the self-employment tax math (the 15.3% rate, the 92.35% adjustment, the Social Security wage cap, the half-SE-tax deduction, quarterly estimates) is genuinely confusing, and most existing tools either bury it behind a sign-up or push you toward paid software.
What we believe
- It should be instant and free. No account, no email, no upsell. You type your numbers, you see your estimate.
- It should be private. Every calculation runs entirely in your browser. Your income figures are never sent to a server or stored.
- It should be accurate and honest. We base the math on IRS and SSA primary sources, use the final 2025 and 2026 federal figures, and update them as the IRS releases each year's numbers.
How we keep it current
Tax figures change every year. We track the IRS, the Social Security Administration, and published inflation adjustments, and update the calculator's rates, wage bases, and brackets as official numbers are released. Where a value is not yet final, we mark it as an estimate.
